I was also unaware of the subtle differences of barsexual and bicurious till recently and share the sentiment of the lesbian woman in Tyra’s show. I feel “barsexuals” who openly flaunt the intention behind their actions are extremely problematic and silence my own presence as a queer woman in “straight” spaces. I have never really liked the song “I kissed a girl” and only thought that it perpetuated this “barsexual” culture, and portrayed lesbians as only playing around, and frivolous. I also find it sad that Tyra took on this topic to make a fun segment rather than bring up serious issues about the representations of queer women in society.

Although I was happy that the topic is being discussed on television, it angered me when Tyra said that she just did the show for fun at first but now realizes how serious it is after the woman spoke up. I have never heard the term “barsexual” before but I have heard of the types of activities they engage in. I agree with the woman who spoke up against it because it does perpetuate stereotypes of lesbians. As a result, lesbians are not taken seriously and depicted as “just having fun”.
